Giving Offerings and Prayers

Many mesas blancas and bóvedas traditionally hold three sacred books upon the mesa:

La Fe en la Oración (Faith in Prayer), the Holy Bible, and Allan Kardec’s Selected Prayers.

These texts are used primarily during Veladas (vigils) and Misas Espirituales (spiritual masses). They serve as guides and points of inspiration but should never become crutches when communicating with your muertos (beloved dead) and ancestros (ancestors).

Speak to your ancestors as you would speak to the living. Every morning, greet them. Every night, bid them goodnight or invite them to walk with you in your dreams. Approach them with sincerity, warmth, and respect.

At first, it may feel awkward or forced, but over time, as trust and confidence grow, the conversation will begin to flow naturally. Tell them about your day. Ask for their company, their protection, or their guidance. They hear you. They respond, often through signs, synchronicities, or dreams.

Preparing Yourself Before Prayer

If you are troubled or heavy-hearted, take a moment to breathe and center yourself. You should not approach your mesa blanca while carrying anger, pride, gossip, or distress. Take a spiritual bath or cleansing shower, anoint yourself with cologne or Florida Water, and quiet your mind before stepping to the table.

Once calm, approach the altar with reverence. Ask your spirits to bring you peace, clarity, or solutions, or to speak to you through your dreams. Our ancestors love to communicate while we sleep; dreams are the sacred language of the dead.

Keep the vibration of your altar high and clean. A peaceful spirit field ensures that your prayers are received clearly and your guides can work freely on your behalf.

The Sacred Act of Offering

Before presenting any offering, whether food, flowers, water, or a candle, raise it gently to your forehead, heart, and lips. This gesture signifies that your thoughts are with them, your love is with them, and you share with them the essence of your life.

It is a small but powerful act of communion; a way of saying, “You live through me.”

Altar Maintenance and Renewal

Every seven days, refresh your altar:

-Replace the water in the goblets or glasses. Pour the old water around the perimeter of your home for protection, or use it to simmer flower petals for a spiritual bath.

-Remove burned candles and replace them with new ones.

-Wash and change the white cloth covering the table.

-Replace old flowers with fresh ones, and light new incense.

These small acts of care are prayers in motion. They keep your mesa blanca alive, radiant, and receptive to divine energy.

A Note of Syncretism

“And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith the Lord, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions and your old men shall dream dreams. And on my servants and on my handmaidens, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, And they shall prophesy.” — Acts 2:17–18

This verse reminds us that prophecy, visions, and dreams are sacred gifts, and our ancestors are often the vessels through which Spirit fulfills that promise.

Keep your altar bright, your prayers sincere, and your faith consistent.

Your ancestors are listening.
